Subject

One wood panel submitted and identified by the client as:

Coated (new product) wood panel

Authorization

Client's letter of May 3, 1990.

Purpose

To determine flame retadancy of the coating during accelerated weathering.

Procedure

Accelerated weathering was accomplished by exposing the panel in a QUV Accelerated Weathering Tester maintained in accord with ASTM G-53. The Tester was programmed to alternate 4 hour periods of ultraviolet B at 60°C with 4 hour periods of water condensation at 50°C. After 500. 750 and 1000 hours of accelerated weathering the panel was tested for flame retardancy by holding a flame beneith the panel for 5 seconds and observing what happened.

Results

After 500 hours of accelerated weathering flame impingement caused the panel to flame for a few seconds. On the back where white deposit was still visible the flame went out at the deposit. On the front where the deposit was no longer visible the flame charred the surface for a few inches and the extinquished itself.

After 750 hours the panel sustained a flame for 44l minutes mainly on the exposed side. No intumescence occurred on the exposed side but did on the backside.

After 1000 hours the panel sustained a flame for a second or two on one edge but could not really be ignited. Flame was impinged upon the panel in many different spots without igniting.
